What is cooperative?

From the International Cooperative Alliance

Cooperatives are people-centered enterprises owned, controlled, and run by and for their members to realize their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations.

Cooperatives bring people together in a democratic and equal way. Cooperatives are democratically managed by the ‘one member, one vote’ rule. Members share equal voting rights regardless of the amount of capital they put into the enterprise.

As businesses driven by values, not just profit, cooperatives share internationally agreed principles and act together to build a better world through cooperation. Putting fairness, equality, and social justice at the heart of the enterprise, cooperatives around the world are allowing people to work together to create sustainable enterprises that generate long-term jobs and prosperity.

Cooperatives allow people to take control of their economic future and, because they are not owned by a few greedy shareholders, the economic and social benefits of their activity stay in the communities where they are established. Profits generated are either reinvested in the enterprise or returned to the members.

The cooperative movement is far from being a marginal phenomenon, at least 12% of humanity is a cooperator
of any of the three million cooperatives on earth.

What type of classes are there?

1. Find a Teacher / Marketplace
Create your profile and offer your own lesson packages.  Set your schedule, prices, demo options, cancellation policy, and more.

As long as you are qualified, you can teach more than one subject or skill. Each teacher has their own unique URL to share their profile.

2. Course Marketplace
Create your own unique group courses and attract students globally in any language, subject, or skill.

Teachers can offer three models:

1. One- time (Single Lesson)
2. Ongoing (Continuous)
3. Multi-Day (Fixed Courses)

3. Private Lessons / Courses
Bring your own students or market your own rates privately.
Private lessons are not visible on the website. This is great for teachers with their own students or clients, or those with students in lower-income economies. You can set a local price without undercutting the marketplace.

Teachers set their own schedule, prices, cancelation policy, etc.

What can I teach at MyCoolClass?

MyCoolClass is for all teachers in a variety of languages, subjects, and skills. There aren’t too many rules about this, but here are a few things that you cannot teach.

  • Non-academic religion classes e.g. Bible Study
  • Illegal activity e.g. how to make weapons/drugs
  • Get rich quick classes
  • Pseudoscience
  • Dating advice
  •  Potentially dangerous experiments such as mixing chemicals
  • Anything that creates risk for a learner to do by themselves without physical supervision such as hand to hand combat training with friends.

Some subjects require degrees or professional licenses and extra verification of your qualifications may take longer to process. You must possess the necessary degrees/certifications/licenses for subjects such as:

  • Law
  • Psychology
  • Medicine

Please note that any medical related classes should be strictly academic and not be practical such as CPR training or how to perform brain surgery.

All classes should be based on facts, research, sharing skills, and science, not promote private opinions. Some classes may only be suitable for adults and must be labelled as such. We require teachers to be qualified for the classes that they offer. While ‘qualified’ is quite vague, MyCoolClass will determine on a case-by-case basis if the class or course meets our standards and may ask for additional information, including lesson plans.

We expect teachers to use good taste and teach things that make the world a better place through diverse knowledge sharing.

Why is there a fee to join MyCoolClass?

Because we are a co-op and not funded by venture capital, all teachers pay an onboarding fee between £5 – £25 after they have been verified and accepted to join MyCoolClass.

Upon completion of training and probation, this fee converts to your share of the cooperative and gives you voting rights.

 See our fee schedule here.

In short, the fee buys your share of ownership in MyCoolClass and shows that you’re serious about joining our community.

How much commission do teachers pay?

As a worker cooperative, all our teachers collectively own and control the business.

MyCoolClass is currently structured so that 19% of what you earn on the platform goes as a contribution to the cooperative.
This contribution, made by all teachers, covers operation costs, payment processor fees, marketing, and member benefits, such as accumulating paid time off.

When MyCoolClass makes a surplus, our members vote on what to do with it, including the possibility of paying dividends to teachers according to their transactions with the cooperative.

Where can I teach?

You can teach anywhere in the world if you have a stable internet connection. Your classroom or teaching space should be professional and suitable. No dance classes in the bathroom or an English class at Disneyland.

All classes should be conducted indoors unless your class requires an outdoor space. There shouldn’t be any background noise or other audio/visual interruptions during your class.

Does MyCoolClass assign students to teachers?

MyCoolClass does not assign students to teachers as we are a marketplace.

While we do market and drive traffic to the website, every teacher is responsible for their own profile, creating their own lesson packages, courses, setting their own schedule, and prices.

We are a cooperative of independent teachers, which means each teacher is responsible for themselves, however we do support each other and provide you with the resources you need to be successful.

Having an attractive profile, a catchy intro video, different lesson package options, as well as being proactive will help get you students.

Simply put, it depends on you and how much effort you put into your teaching business.

What video software is used for lessons? Can I use Zoom?

MyCoolClass has multiple classroom options to choose from to fit you and your students’ needs.

  • Zoom
  • BigBlueButton (BBB)
  • Google Meet
  • Whereby
  • Voov
Can I use a tablet or phone to teach?

Yes and no. Our platform works best using a laptop so you can utilize all the classroom features. Phones are too small, and in most cases not practical to teach on. Tablets are fine, but please become familiar with options and limitations.

What material can I use in my classes?

As an independent teacher, you are responsible for your class listings, what you do, and the material you use in your classroom. MyCoolClass does not monitor or record lessons.

However, it is your responsibility to use materials legally or have permission to use them. MyCoolClass assumes no responsibility or liability for the materials our teachers use as stated in our Terms & Conditions.

If a copyright holder sends us a takedown order or notifies us of infringement or claim of illegal usage, we will inform the teacher to stop using the copyrighted material and remove the course if necessary.

MyCoolClass is unable to give any legal advice regarding the legality of your teaching material.
