What is cooperative?

From the International Cooperative Alliance

Cooperatives are people-centered enterprises owned, controlled, and run by and for their members to realize their common economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations.

Cooperatives bring people together in a democratic and equal way. Whether the members are the customers, employees,
users or residents, cooperatives are democratically managed by the ‘one member, one vote’ rule.
Members share equal voting rights regardless of the amount of capital they put into the enterprise.

As businesses driven by values, not just profit, cooperatives share internationally agreed principles and act together to build a better world through cooperation. Putting fairness, equality, and social justice at the heart of the enterprise, cooperatives around the world are allowing people to work together to create sustainable enterprises that generate long-term jobs and prosperity.

Cooperatives allow people to take control of their economic future and, because they are not owned by shareholders,
the economic and social benefits of their activity stay in the communities where they are established.
Profits generated are either reinvested in the enterprise or returned to the members.

The cooperative movement is far from being a marginal phenomenon, at least 12% of humanity is a cooperator
of any of the 3 million cooperatives on earth.

For more information about cooperatives, please check out the International Cooperative Alliance and Co-operatives UK.

What type of classes are there?

1. Find a Teacher / Marketplace
Teachers create their profile on the Marketplace, offer their own lesson packages, set their own schedule, prices, demo options, cancelation policy, etc.

As long as you are qualified, you can teach more than one subject or skill. Each teacher has their own URL to share and market themselves as well.

2. Find a Course
Teachers create their own courses which are then featured on the MyCoolClass website.
Teachers set their own schedule, prices, cancelation policy, etc. Students enroll themselves.

3. Private Lessons / Courses
Bring your own students or market your own rates privately.
Private lessons are not visible on the website. This is great for teachers with their own students or clients, or those with students in low-income countries. You can set a local price without undercutting the marketplace.

Teachers set their own schedule, prices, cancelation policy, etc.

4. MyCoolClass Courses – Coming Soon
Teachers can collaborate and create course material. Course creators submit their course to our Curriculum Review Team.
Once the course is approved, our Design Team will bring it to life and we’ll market it.

Course creators earn royalties every time it’s sold!

Students buy the course, and MyCoolClass assigns the teacher.
For children’s ESL courses, a native and non-native English-speaking teacher will be assigned to each student.
Prices will be fixed by MyCoolClass.

Is there a platform fee?

No. Remember, this is a cooperative so as a teacher you own the business. Nobody is profiting from your labor. That being said, the cooperative is currently structured so that 19% of what you earn on the platform goes, as a contribution, to MyCoolClass. This contribution, made by all teachers, covers operation costs, expenses, marketing, the general fund, and member benefits such as accumulating paid time off. We do not have any investors or shareholders making money from your hard work and all Team Members are paid a fair and reasonable salary.

What can I teach at MyCoolClass?

MyCoolClass is for all teachers in a variety of languages, subjects, and skills. There aren’t too many rules about this, but here are a few things that you cannot teach.

  • Non-academic religion classes e.g. Bible Study
  • Illegal activity e.g. how to make weapons/drugs
  • Get rich quick classes
  • Pseudoscience
  • Dating advice
  •  Potentially dangerous experiments such as mixing chemicals
  • Anything that creates risk for a learner to do by themselves without physical supervision such as hand to hand combat training with friends.

Some subjects require degrees or professional licenses and extra verification of your qualifications may take longer to process. You must possess the necessary degrees/certifications/licenses for subjects such as:

  • Law
  • Psychology
  • Medicine

Please note that any medical related classes should be strictly academic and not be practical such as CPR training or how to administer an IV.

All classes should be based on facts, research, sharing skills, and science, not promote personal opinions. Some classes may only be suitable for adults and must be labeled as such. We require teachers to be qualified for the classes that they offer. While ‘qualified’ is quite vague, MyCoolClass will determine on a case-by-case basis if the class or course meets our standards and may ask for additional information, including lesson plans.

We expect teachers to use good taste and teach things that make the world a better place though diverse knowledge sharing.

Where can I teach?

You can teach anywhere in the world if you have a stable internet connection. Your classroom or teaching space should be professional and suitable. No dance classes in the bathroom or an English class at Disneyland.

All classes should be conducted indoors unless your class requires an outdoor space. There shouldn’t be any background noise or other audio/visual interruptions during your class.

Can I use a tablet or phone to teach?

Yes and no. Our platform works best using a laptop so you can utilize all the classroom features. Phones are too small, and in most cases not practical to teach on. Tablets are fine, but please become familiar with options and limitations. You can upload pdf or Word files from your laptop to your classroom and teach from your tablet.
